It's predicted how dependent we've come to be as a community on electronic transportation devices! E-mail, text messaging, Pda's, cell phones, video conferencing, blackberries, blueberries, rasberries, and more...have taken the place of good old fashioned, face-to-face transportation prominent to many interpersonal difficulties and miscommunications in today's workplace.

You may be thinking...Why heighten my interpersonal skills when most businesses do 99% of transportation by telephone, teleconferencing, videoconferencing, e-mail, and on rare occasions, snail mail. A favorite way of reasoning today...but, is it in effect the accurate way? "Face-to-face transportation remains the most great human interaction," says Kathleen Begley, Ed.D., author of Face-to-Face Communication, manufacture Human Connections in a Technology-Driven World. "As wonderful as electronic devices are, they can never fully replace the intimacy and immediacy of people conversing in the same room and it has worked for millions of years."

In business, we talk about "B2B" (business to business) and "B2C" (business to consumer) methods. I try to buck the trend (in a determined way!) to stress the point of face-to-face communication. You'll hear me talk a lot about the "P2P" (people-to-people) connections and how prominent it is to get beyond technology and talk face-to-face with friends, family, colleagues, customers, vendors, and the like. You may think that's a bit old-fashioned, but in my opinion, there is no substitution for the human, up-close and personal contact. Don't get me wrong, there is a place for the dreadful technology tools we have today and I use it regularly, but it's not all the time my first or best choice.

Several decades ago, John Naisbitt, in his mega 1960's best-seller, Megatrends: Ten New Directions Transforming Our Lives, brought a new opinion to the forefront called "high tech, high touch." His idea was that "as human beings became capable of anonymous electronic communication, they would concurrently need more close-up personal interaction." Seems to me that he was right on target!

We live in a community when flocking to the local coffee shop or diner for coffee chats with business associates or friends is a testimony to our need for human togetherness, especially when most coffee lovers can make a latte or cappuccino right in their homes. Think about the fortunes coffee establishments are manufacture on our need for face-to-face communication! The people-to-people connections...

We hear of the many children (and adults) who spend countless hours alone playing video games. However, The Game Manufacturing relationship reported in 2003 that family board game sales (like Monopoly and Scrabble) are booming and growing at 20% per year. Cranium has recently come out with a whole new line of board games for our "little people" (ages 3+). The people-to-people connections start at an early age - if you haven't heard it, ask me to tell you my "Papa Zitto" story!

Even when disaster strikes and the news media bring these events into our homes and workplaces via Tv, radio and the Internet, we seek out opportunities to share grief. I personally waited in line for practically three hours with hundreds of others to visit Ground Zero in New York when it opened to the social in December 2001. Many people also left makeshift shrines colse to to honor the victims of that tragedy. The people-to-people connections...

We lead hectic, multi-tasking lives both at home and in the workplace these days and we find the need for equilibrium even more significant than in days gone by. We understand that technology can be impersonal, but it's quick! We know we need to make time for more people-to-people connections but, the reality of the hectic pace doesn't leave us much time for this more intimate form of communication. You may be thinking, isn't it much faster to make a quick phone call, send a brief e-mail, or hook up via video-conferencing to have a meeting of the minds? Yes and no. It's a communications paradox...faster is not all the time better.

So the great interrogate may be, how can we make the best of both worlds - technology and face-to-face, people-to-people connections?

Just as fashions are redesigned and come back with a distinction on a style from days-gone- by, I believe it is time for redesigning and revitalizing face-to-face (P2P) transportation skills.

We need to get the equilibrium right! People-to-people (P2P) transportation skills remain one of the original success factors in business, even in this age of technology. There are many situations - often those appealing conflict, hurt feelings, high priority, or a large sum of money - that interrogate business people take the time and trouble to get in the same room to share information. Video-conferencing has come to be a good simulation and cost-effective recipe when individuals are in remote locations, but there is still no substitute for good, old-fashioned, face-to-face communication.

Don't take my word for it...Let's take a look at what some of the experts are saying.

Tom Peters, internationally known business guru, says without reservation that you should enduringly attend to your face-to-face communication. Not to do so, will lead to work disaster. "We believe in high tech, high touch," Peters writes. "No question, technology is the Great Enabler. But, paradoxically, now the human bit is more, not less, prominent than ever before."

Sheila Hodge, author of Global Smarts: The Art of Communicating and Deal manufacture in any place in the World, says "The modern office is full of gadgets - computers and the Internet, uplinks and downlinks, videoconferencing, and online databases. Many people think they should let the fancy technology deal with the messy task of interfacing with people."

Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, in her book Reading People, talks about how young, technically oriented employees tend to narrate mostly in computer chat rooms. "If you want to come to be a great communicator, you must make a conscious endeavor to engage other people (in person)," she writes. "Even the most entrenched Internet junkie can learn the true meaning of 'chat' if the desire is there, but you have to get off the couch and make it happen."

Gary McClain and Deborah Romaine in their book, The all things Managing people Book, put it this way..."Consistent, daily face-to-face transportation promotes more than just good feelings; it also promotes sufficient and collaborative teamwork."

"One of the most significant areas of transportation to get right in business is the one-on-one situations - especially contribution advice, constructive feedback, and annual operation appraisals," says Chris Roebuck in sufficient Communication.

One of my favorite quotes stated very simply by Margaret Wheatley, Turning to One Another: easy Conversations to Restore Hope for the Future, says "I can believe we can convert the world if we start talking to one an additional one again."

Sounds like we're on to something here...So, what can you do? Start out by taking an honest look at your transportation methods and your attitude about technology vs. (P2P) face-to-face interaction. Are you e-mailing more and meeting less for financial reasons? Are you avoiding human touch mostly because of a lack of interpersonal skills? If the latter is true, you need to take activity before it's too late.

The next time you are tempted to send an e-mail, text message or make a phone call for other than habit purposes, stop! Get back to basics. Go out of your ease zone and, instead, send the e-mail, text message or make the call to set up a face-to-face, in person meeting with the person behind the technology! Why? Because it works!

The twelve step program created by Alcoholics Anonymous has been used as a model for many people to break their addiction to alcohol, drugs and other destructive behaviours. It has been adapted to many situations to deal with distinct problems people have. I started reasoning about these steps when I was considering how to stop people from creating and delivering PowerPoint presentations that are ineffective and damaging to their careers.

In this record I am giving you my twelve step program for breaking the addiction that many presenters have. These presenters have become accustomed to packing their slides with text and data and mostly reading the slides to their audience. They know others have somehow managed to use visuals effectively in presentations, but they need some help to break the habit they have.

1. I admit that my abuse of PowerPoint has become unmanageable. I can't seem to figure out how to stop inflicting overloaded text and data slides on my audiences. My audiences don't find my presentations effective, even if they aren't telling me that to my face.
2. I have come to believe that there is a better way that can save my presentations. I have seen other presenters deliver productive presentations with persuasive visuals, so I know there is a better way. I see that they start with structure, originate and use visuals that elucidate their message, and deliver their presentation as if they are having a conversation with the audience. I'd like to be able to do this too.
3. I have made a decision to turn my presentations over to this better way of presenting. I believe that I can change my ways. I believe that it is possible and that it doesn't want an innate found quality to do it. I believe that I can learn the skills I need to be able to originate productive PowerPoint presentations.
4. I have made a fearless account of my skills at design, creation and delivery of presentations. I have used honest feedback from others and independent assessments to truly value what I am good at and where I need to found skills. I have been encouraged because now I know what I need to learn in order to become a better presenter.
5. I have admitted publicly that my presentations have not been as good as they should have been. I have committed to my family, friends, colleagues and my boss that I know I can originate and deliver better presentations. I have done this publicly so that I can count on their support, advice and encouragement straight through this process. I also want them to hold me accountable to make these changes. I look forward to celebrating with them as I see the changes result in victorious presentations.
6. I am ready to address my presentation faults. I know this will involve hard work and I am willing to commit to the efforts that are necessary. I will allocate the time requisite to study and convention these new skills.
7. I have asked for aid to address my shortcomings. Knowing that this will take time and effort, I have asked for approval at work and home for time and funding to get the training I need. I have made the time in my program for the required learning, better preparing of my presentations, and more practice for each presentation.
8. I have made a list of the mistakes I have made using PowerPoint and am willing to correct them. From the fearless account of skills in step four, I have listed the areas that I need to improve on. I will seek out the training, books, and other resources that will help me improve in these definite areas. I will seek the advice of coaches and others who can give me the master perspective I need.
9. I will make my presentations better for future audiences. I know that the training and studying will be difficult at first to implement in my presentations. change is difficult when you start it. I commit to the work required to make the changes and will push straight through the difficult times in order to make the changes I have committed to. I won't give up when the going gets tough.
10. I will continue to value my presentations beyond doubt and admit mistakes when I find them. I will use checklists and rubrics to value all aspects of my presentation, from design, to content, to delivery. I will be ruthless in my evaluations so that I don't slip back into the practices I once followed. I will ask experts for their honest opinions to help check my progress.
11. I will continue to learn and found my presentation quality with the goal to become the best presenter I can be. I know that this is not a one-time effort. I will need ongoing advice and ideas in order to continue to improve. I commit to continuous studying straight through books, blogs, videos, courses, newsletters, conferences, etc. I will ask presenters I respect which view leaders they result and learn from them.
12. Having realized the errors of my presentations in the past, I have tried to share this message with other presenters and demonstrate better presentations ideas when I present. When I see an article, video, blog post, tweet, or other item that demonstrates this better way to present, I will tell it to my network straight through my conversations, e-mails, blog posts, tweets, etc. I will recommend to my colleagues, bosses, and friends, those books, experts, web sites, blogs, newsletters, etc. That have helped me.

Now it is truly up to you. I know that changing from your old ways of presenting is difficult at first. How to Write a Paper in One Night

Being in college is a chore. It takes a lot of work, carefully planned over the course of a week, or a month, or a quarter to make sure all gets done with the full attention it deserves....are you laughing yet? No one puts in the time "required" to properly unblemished their college work. No, rather it's a rush at the end every week or two to unblemished a 10 page paper or learn 200 years of aged Roman history overnight. You all do it, I did it. It's probably a good training skill than all the random stuff you "learn", because certainly in real life do you think you'll have the time to sit and agenda all that pops into your life ahead of time. Yeah...thought not.

Anyways, for those of you just entering college from the snore inducing boredom and ease of High School, you're probably incredibly unprepared for the shear number of work you'll have to pull out in the last second. I'm not saying it's easy just because you'll procrastinate. No, it's still hard. You certainly should take the time to do your work properly. You just won't, and so you need to learn how to procrastinate. It's a fine art, in which I feel I've become something of a Renoir.

First off, make sure you've got all your books and notes. If you don't go to class, which is entirely likely for those of the procrastinating ilk, make sure you get them from a classmate. Also, double check and make sure your professor doesn't have a website. They'll usually tell you, but more than once I've found a class's notes sitting in an archive online, especially now that 90% of them put all they teach you into PowerPoint presentations and then just read it to you for an hour every day (yeah, lazy). You should have your books too. If you never bothered buying them because you would just take notes or go to sparknotes, then you'd good go buy them, because Bsing your way through a paper is going to take at least some resources. You can't magically ascertain the data from just being near smarter people. School would be much easier if that were the case.

So, sit down and start reading. Yup, you're going to be reading a lot the night before your work is due. But, this is good than doing all the assigned reading, because now you're searching for definite information. Instead of normal learning (which would only stick around and clutter up your brain later) you're doing targeted research. An eighth the time, and none of that pesky remembering it. You should have your topic at least. If not, start surfing message boards and snag one from person smarter than you. Don't ever take their work though. The last thing you need is to get kicked out of school for plagiarism. It's lazy and embarrassing. Steal concepts, but never words. And if you steal a opinion from the middle of their work, cite them. Your university will not take amiable to cheating. You'll be so red taped and black listed, you might as well go and get an application at Jack in the Box, and trust me you don't want to work in fast food.

You can't procrastinate now. You've done that for three weeks, so I'm sorry (I know it hurts), but in terms of actual physical writing time, you'll need at least three hours to type your paper, which speaks nothing of writing it. And writing it involves seeing quotations and that ever so pesky chore of thinking. Sit down, grab an vigor drink and a bag of chips, close your door and put some headphones on. No television, and put your phone on the charger. Now open up the word processor and just start typing.

You probably think you have writer's block. But, writer's block is completely unrelated to having certainly no idea what you're talking about. You're stuck with the second one right now, so just keep on reading on your topic and seeing bits and pieces to put together.

The thing here that most habitancy don't comprehend is that the thorough writing process isn't in corollary for you. You're not drafting, or brainstorming. By now you should have a normal idea about what you want to say. It might be normal but you'll clarify in your next few paragraphs, and then come back and rewrite the first paragraph.

Paragraph one is almost all the time trash. Especially with this method, because your weary, angered professor after reading 30 of these lovely last petite essays will put a big red X through anyone that doesn't have to do with your paper, and those first few grasping sentences are completely unrelated.
But now you can start stealing from the text. Snag a quote and make a point. Snag another quote and make another point. If your thesis ends up as something incredibly broad and useless like "Pip's quest from anonymity and worthlessness into a position of wealth and power in London mirrors the classical hero quests, but works through Dickensian views of industrial England" you're still good. It sounds engaging and has a lot of promise. Now just find definite quotes and build a narrative. Start at the beginning of his change, talk about his childhood, then go to when he changes, then collate to the Hero quests of old, then show how they're different.

Almost any paper, if written speedily can boil down to something straightforward and incredibly easy to write, a collate and unlikeness paper. You choose a important theme from the book you just "read". Find a source that mirrors or good yet foils this theme and collate the two. Don't just list how they're different though. That's high school stuff right there. You'll want to write exactly how the exterior source changes what you think of your book. It sounds hard but jus think about it. You've got Great Expectations. It has a main character who goes on a kind of quest. Now you have a excellent archetype of which there are hundreds of sources to draw on. You take a basic form of this archetype and apply it to Pip's quest and how he fits it, and when he doesn't fit it. Now you cease your paper by describing why he doesn't fit it sometimes. Which gets you back to the Dickensian views part. You've just pretty much written a paper that says, Pip's quest is excellent but different because Dickens was writing about a different time in human history. Incredibly simple; you're not telling anyone anyone new, but three things will guarantee a good grade.

1. If you write well at all. You've got to be a halfway decent writer, which if you're in college I'll assume you are.

2. Professors love exterior references. It shows initiative and investigate and makes it seem like you did extra work (which you didn't). I've written papers overnight without drafts and without ever reading them back to myself and received comments that I must have spent hours working on it. Not quite.

3. Belief in your assertions. Say all with absolute certainty, and back it up with a quote. Do this sufficient and even if you're wrong, it'll seem like you've made a decent point, which gets you brownie points.

Writing a paper is a tumultuous task but it's also a scalable task that can be made incredibly quick and easy if you know how. My second to last quarter of college, I wrote three papers in two days; two of them 10 pages, and one 25 pages, and received a 3.8, and two 3.7s. It's a matter of Belief and above all else an unmitigated fearlessness to be incredibly lazy.

Despite such protestations, some of the biggest names in corporate America are bloggers.

Not all leaders are cut out for a communal role. It takes a definite type with a deft touch. Still, could you dream Apple being the enterprise it is without Steve Jobs very communal leadership? Would anyone other than financial managers and investors know Berkshire Hathaway if not for a homespun personality like Warren Buffett? Would Ge be the icon it is today without the fierce and charismatic leadership style of Jack Welch?
